Bath Daily is an independent news and information site for Bath and North East Somerset. We work from documents, we link to every one of them, and we are not connected to the council or to anybody we write about.
Where we cover
Bath itself is the centre of the patch: the city, the river, and the neighbourhoods people actually live in at Twerton, Oldfield Park, Combe Down, Larkhall, Batheaston, Bathford and Bathampton. The council also covers Keynsham and Saltford, which face Bristol as much as they face Bath, and the former coalfield towns and villages to the south, Midsomer Norton, Radstock, Paulton, Peasedown St John, Timsbury and Clutton, and the Chew Valley around Chew Magna and Chew Stoke. Those places are not suburbs of Bath and we do not write about them as though they were.
What we publish
Reporting built from the public record, and reference pages for the questions people search in a hurry. The record here means Bath and North East Somerset Council’s planning register and committee papers, licensing notices, police.uk crime data, HM Land Registry sold prices, Food Standards Agency hygiene ratings, Environment Agency flood warnings for the Bristol Avon and the Chew, and company filings in The Gazette. Some decisions that affect the area are taken at West of England combined authority level rather than in Bath, and we say which is which.
Why the paperwork matters here
The council has been a unitary authority since 1996, so bins, planning, parking, licensing, council tax, schools and social care all sit with one body. Add World Heritage status and a city where most of the centre is listed, and the planning file becomes the single most consequential document in local life. Reading those files and putting them into plain English is most of what this site does.
